Empowering Kenyan Youth through Literacy and Numeracy

Path Youth, a Kenyan CBO, founded by passionate youth, supports children and adolescents, providing essential knowledge for a sustainable, empowered future - By Salim Mazang’ang’a and Fridah Okomo

Quality education is a social pillar and a priority sector in Kenya’s vision for 2030. Despite the literacy levels standing at 87.5%, quality education is still unheard of. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated learning inequalities among marginalized children. As young people, we felt the need to be at the forefront of championing Foundational Numeracy and Learning Skills for marginalized children. Refusing to let circumstances dictate our futures, as it does for many others, we decided to take control of our own education. Together with friends living in Likoni, Kenya, we founded Path Youth in 2019, a Community Based Organization (CBO) operating in Mombasa County, Kenya, with the long-term goal of expanding its work into the greater coastal region to transform the lives of other eager learners. Since then, Path Youth has supported children and adolescents in and outside of school, equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to become a sustainable, empowered, and informed generation.

In today’s fast-paced and knowledge-driven world, access to quality education is crucial for individuals to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society. However, many communities, particularly in underserved regions, face significant challenges in providing basic education opportunities. In response to this pressing need, the implementation of a literacy and numeracy initiative has emerged as a beacon of hope, empowering individuals with essential skills to unlock their full potential and create a brighter future for themselves and their communities. Collaboration and partnership have been indispensable.

We are truly honored to partner with DEVI Sansthan (Dignity Education Vision International) to accelerate and scale up the foundational literacy and numeracy program in Kenya. As the Path Youth organization, we have been holding numeracy boot camp initiatives to equip participants with essential foundational skills that open doors to further education and improved life opportunities. The strategic collaboration with DEVI has enabled us to receive learning resources and materials to bridge gaps in foundational skills, empowering children to achieve academic success and build a strong foundation for future learning. Our volunteer teachers are also set to receive master training from DEVI to effectively implement the Literacy Numeracy Bootcamps.

During the literacy and numeracy boot camp, children experience intensive learning sessions that prioritize essential skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. These sessions are thoughtfully crafted to be engaging, interactive, and tailored to cater to each child’s individual needs. To ensure personalized attention and focused learning, children are grouped in small classes, allowing instructors to identify specific learning requirements and provide targeted support.

Led by experienced and trained educators, the boot camp employs innovative teaching methods that keep children motivated and excited about learning. The inclusion of hands-on activities, games, and real-world applications adds a practical dimension to their education, enabling them to grasp abstract concepts more effectively. Regular assessments and progress tracking play a vital role in monitoring each child’s development, identifying areas for improvement, and adjusting teaching strategies to optimize learning outcomes.

John’s Triumph with the Literacy and Numeracy Bootcamp

John, a 10-year-old boy, lives in a slummy area in Mombasa, Likoni, where access to quality education is limited. The school he attends lacks resources and trained teachers, leading to low literacy and numeracy rates among the students. In response to this pressing issue, Path Youth Organization partners with other local organizations to launch the Literacy and Numeracy Bootcamp Initiative. The aim was to provide intensive and focused support to children like John, who were struggling with their basic reading and math skills

John joined the boot camp with some hesitation but quickly found himself immersed in a supportive and engaging learning environment. The program utilized interactive teaching methods, games, and hands-on activities to make learning fun and accessible for the children. Moreover, the boot camp had enthusiastic and well-trained teachers who were passionate about helping children succeed.

During the course of the boot camp, John’s confidence in his abilities grew, and he began to enjoy learning for the first time in his life. He eagerly attended each session, and his progress was remarkable. With the personalized attention and encouragement from his teachers, he steadily improved his reading comprehension and mathematical skills. By the end of the boot camp, John’s transformation was truly remarkable. He went from being a hesitant and struggling student to one of the top performers in his class. Not only did he excel academically, but his newfound confidence also spilled over into other areas of his life.

John’s success in the boot camp not only motivated him to continue his education but also inspired other children in his village to do the same. John’s journey is just one of many success stories that emerged from the Literacy and Numeracy Bootcamp Initiative. Through the dedication of volunteer teachers, the support of local communities, and the commitment of organizations involved, the initiative continues to transform the lives of countless children, providing them with the tools they need to build a brighter future.
